Innovation - Cisco Unified Fabric
The typical data center setting provides support for two to three similar networks: for data, storage and server clusters. Furthermore, servers frequently have dedicated interfaces for administration, security or the live migration of virtual machines. Support for these interfaces caused considerable cost in terms of interfaces, cables, rack space, upstream switches and power and cooling.
Unified Fabric brings these three different types of traffic in a universal network with high performance and high availability in order to simplify the network infrastructure and reduce costs. The universal network must be intelligent enough to distinguish the different types of traffic and to process accordingly .Besides reducing the total cost of the extensive supports unified fabric virtualization of data centers by providing consistent, always available network and storage services for all connected devices.
In the provision of unified fabric for data centers, there are two basic approaches: Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and Internet SCSI (iSCSI). Both standards are supported on the basis of a reliable 10-Gigabit Ethernet in unified fabric.
While the FCoE standards are in the final stages of ratification by ANSI T.11, Cisco has created to support an environment with partners such as EMC, NetApp, QLogic, Emulex and Intel to help our clients to have a ready and practical solution.
The operating loss of unified fabric also provides a better performance of iSCSI, the standard that is used by Cisco Catalyst switches and Cisco Nexus-supported. The Cisco MDS Series of storage switches provides hardware and software features that were designed specifically to support iSCSI.
Switches:
The Cisco Nexus family designed to support unified fabric currently on Nexus 5000 Switch DCB and FCoE. Support for these features is also planned on the Cisco Nexus 7000 switch and the MDS product family.
Unified Computing System:
The Cisco Unified Computing System offers data center as a platform for next-generation seamless combination of networking, computing and virtualization resources in a system. Unified fabric in the design of the platform plays a significant role.
Host Adapter:
These unique host adapters, also called converged network adapters are essential to maintain FCoE. As hardware adapters are obtainable from Emulex and QLogic but software for 10-Gigabit Ethernet network interfaces is offered by Intel.
