Why 10Mb/s Network Cards May Outperform Gigabit on the Internet
On the surface it seems counter intuitive to think that 10Mb/s network interface cards would run faster than Gigabit network interface cards. But when it comes to surfing the web or even playing online games that is precisely what the optimum setting may be for you. Here is the reasoning.
Consider an eight lane motorway with a speed limit of 100mph. This road would have a tremendous maximum traffic flow and would certainly be able to move large volumes of vehicles in a short period of time. Rough calculations suggest that any given point may see up to 14,000 vehicles per hour. In computer network terms, lets call this Gigabit Ethernet.
Now consider that our eight lane monster motorway ends suddenly. The speed limit drops to 40mph and the eight lanes merge into one. In computer network terms, lets call the single lane road an ADSL Broadband connection.
Despite ample capacity on the motorway, it is hard to imagine anything but giant traffic jams in this environment as 14,000 vehicles struggle to merge into the single lane. Anyone who drives to work in a large city may be very familiar with this routine, the effect of lopsided road capacities on motorways is seen in cities all around the world every day. And once the traffic jam starts, the speed differential between the vehicles still approaching compared to those already in a jam only aggravates the problem. In other words, cars arrive faster than they can be cleared.
Connecting your Gigabit adapter on your computer and surfing the Internet on a Broadband connection produces a similar result. At an average packet size of 400 Bytes, approximately 312,000 packets can arrive every second. Even at the generous DSL upload speed of 5mb/s, just 1500 packets can be serviced every second potentially leaving 310,000 packets queuing up in the modems memory buffers.
But things get worse; the modems memory buffers are not inexhaustible and that's really where performance problems begin. As the modem transmit buffers fill excess packets are dropped. Unfortunately, the only device that will notice the missing packets is the destination computer. That means that correcting the packet drops is not just a matter of resending. A TCP process involving timers and sequence numbers is triggered on the destination computer…the result - more delays.
But things gets even worse. TCP/IP was designed in an era when network links were slow and less reliable than today. It has its own built in throttling mechanisms that are designed to slow down transfer rates in the event that packets go missing. The thinking behind the design is that packets went missing because they were dropped due to congestion. So in order to avoid congestion there are built in variables in the protocol that effectively slow down the connection as required.
So how does a 10mb/s network connection help matters? Essentially, this setting is not perfect either but it does transmit traffic 100 times slower than Gigabit. In other words, the eight lane motorway is now one lane. There is still a speed differential between the computer's network interface card and the Broadband connection but it is not as drastic and that helps modem memory buffers to stay in check.
So if your Internet link connects at rates less than 10Mb/s you may want to try to adjust your network card speed accordingly. Similarly, if your Internet link connects at rates greater than 10Mb/s but less that 100Mb/s then perhaps setting your computer network interface card to 100Mb/s may be your optimal setting.
If you do decide to try to connect your computer at a slower rate to avoid congestion then the connection speed must be set exactly the same on both sides of the link. That is, if your computer's network card is set to 10Mb/s Full Duplex then the other end (the Ethernet switch) must also be set exactly the same – 10Mb/s Full Duplex. Do not attempt to change settings if you cannot also change the device that your computer connects to. This is because manual settings stop the autonegotiation process on one end of the connection which can cause a mismatch in speed and duplex. A speed and duplex mismatch will either stop the link from working or cause significant performance problems. The opposite of what you wanted to achieve!
This article was written on a computer connected at 10Mb/s Full Duplex – no packets were harmed during production.

Network failure when installing a Gigabit NIC and disable the Onboard network card.?
I have a modem linked to a router wich is linked to an 8 port switch and 8 workstations, everything is set static(IP, DNS, Gateway, workgroup). recently i have installed gigabit network card to few of the workstations and they work except one. When i disable the onboard NIC and setup the Gigabit card the network connection seems ok, but the workgroup and internet are not available!
the NIC is brand new, the led of the card blinks and also the led from the switch.
I cannot ping this workstation ip from the router!
At the connection status, the activity shows that i can only send packets but not receiving.
I tried removing the firewalls and ativirus protection.
Still no succes...
Please help!!! :d
try a different cable its possible the receiving wires are screwed up if that doesn't work i would say the NIC is defective
