How can I transfer files from one notebook to another without having to build a network?

I need an easy way to transfer my files from my notebook to my wifes notebook. I've bought all kind of cables but nothing seems to work (easily). We both have Windows XP. Of course I know I can burn a CD or use a Memory Stick or send files by email. But its a lot of Information and I hope there is a better and faster way to do it... Thanks...

This is for XP user's only (as you say you are). Have you tried the "File settings and Transfer Wizard"? Technically, it's used to transfer everything from an "old" computer to a "new" one, BUT, I use it to move (and backup) tons of files from my primary hard drive to my secondary hard drive. Likewise you can use it for a quick move of files from your laptop to your wife's. You simply tell it that you only want to move "files" (not settings) from the "old" computer (probably yours) to a "new" computer (probably your wife's) and BOOM it's done.
This is a little used or understood technique and once you get a handle on it you will find it very convenient with no need for networking.
Just go to:
Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools - File Settings and Transfer Wizard.
Follow the on-screen directions and you will have no problem! Make sure you turn off the "settings" part as you are only transferring files! Of course you will still need a direct cable between the two machines but you said you already have these.
