on device manager under other device it shows pci ethernet controller with the yellow question mark. how to get rid of that. please help. thank you

Driver is not installed or not loading properly

Install the ethernet driver from the motherboard CD. Reboot and then check to see if has been resolved.

Make sure in device manager the ethernet controller is set to enabled. If the driver is installed and you still have yellow question mark, it then points to the service is not starting properly

1) control panel>Administrative Tools>services> scroll down to see if your ethernet card service is here & set to Automatic and it has started. If nots listed here then use recovery console to see the running state.

Another excellent way to see ALL services that run in win xp. Is to use the Recovery Console. Services under control panel only list a tiny bit of services running on your computer.

Install the win xp recovery console. Then find the ethernet controller driver by using listsvc command and make sure it is set to auto.

To see the name of the driver installed for your ethernet card. In device manager double click ethernet controller. Click driver tab..then click Driver Details...write down the name of the .sys files & any files listed. When you have the name of the ethernet driver

important commands are
listsvc - this will scroll through pages of driver listings
enable - enables a service and sets what startup method is used for driver
disable - driver is not in a running state / off

by using recovery console and scrolling through the service list. Look for the ethernet driver .sys file or a service name thats a part of your ethernet controller. Some times the start method may mess the driver from loading. When you find that driver in the list. Make sure it is set to AUTO. If its set to manual or disabled set the service to enabled Auto
